Lionel Messi Writes FIFA to Dismiss His 4-Match Ban

Following the four-match international ban handed to him by the world football governing body, Argentinian superstar Lionel Messi has written to FIFA to request that the ban be overturned. The Barcelona legend was punished for swearing at a match official during Argentina’s World Cup qualifier against Chile last week Thursday, and was fined 10,000 Swiss francs ($10,160) by FIFA’s disciplinary panel, which considers Messi to have breached article 57 of FIFA’s disciplinary code by displaying “offensive behaviour” towards the assistant.

But Messi, in his letter, claimed his words had not been aimed at the official and that he yelled “at the air.” “I vehemently deny having offended assistant referee 1 during the game against Chile, and more so do not believe that my conduct falls under article 57 of FIFA’s disciplinary code,” he wrote.

“Assistant referee 1, of Brazilian nationality, perfectly understood what I was saying, so much so that we spoke amicably and at no time did my words offend or insult the official. “If any of my words made assistant referee 1 uncomfortable, they were never directed at him but rather to the air and for that, I apologise.” Messi concluded with, “I hereby expressly request for the disciplinary case to be dismissed without any sanction against me.” Newly elected president of the Argentina Football Association on Wednesday, Claudio Tapia also told a news conference the federation was working on the appeal.

“We have the best team of lawyers on this issue, trying to reduce Messi’s suspension.” Messi’s ban, if not reviewed, will make him miss three of the remaining four World Cup qualifying matches with his home country Argentina. The 29-year old already missed the tie against Bolivia, which Argentina lost 2-0; and will also miss the crucial ties against Uruguay, Peru and Venezuela as Argentina struggle to claim a spot at the World Cup finals in Russia next year.

A Nigerian pilot, Ademilola Odujinrin, on Wednesday made history when he emerged the first African pilot to undertake a solo flight around the world. Odujinrin, popularly called ‘Lola’, achieved the feat after safely landing at the Washington Dulles International Airport, from the trip he embarked upon in September last year He embarked on the trip under Project Transcend, a foundation which aims to inspire young people to achieve their goals, regardless of their personal circumstances. He said: “Ever since I was a child, I dreamed of one day flying around the world. We have a responsibility to lead by example and follow our dreams. I want African children to think: ‘I can do this too!’” Odunjinrin who works with Air Djibouti successfully completed an entire circumnavigation in a Cirrus SR22, stopping in more than 15 countries on five continents.

On arrival, Odunjinrin was met and welcomed by to Air Djibouti’s Chairman, Aboubaker Omar Hadi, and Cardiff Aviation’s Chairman, Bruce Dickinson. Also on the welcoming team was the Ambassador of Djibouti to the United States, His Excellency, Mr. Mohamed Siad Doualeh; Senior Director of Strategic Planning for Djibouti Ports & Free Zones Authority, Mr. Dawit Michael Gebre-ab; and Chief Operating Officer of Air Djibouti, Mr. Moussa Houssein. Ademilola has logged over 4,000 hours as a commercial Boeing 737 pilot since earning his pilot licence six years ago.

F​IFA Proposed more Allocations to Africa 48-team W’Cup​

​Concerning the 48-team World Cup format which begins in 2026, t​he FIFA Council has agreed on a new​propose​d​slot allocation during their meeting at FIFA headquarters​in Zurich on Thursday. T​he new proposal would see an additional four slots for the African continent, which is being represented by five teams in next year’s edition.
​ According to a report on ​the Fédération Internationale de Football Association websit​e, ​the proposal will be presented to the FIFA council awaiting its official ratification during their next meeting which will be held in Manama, Bahrain on the 9th of May.

Here’s a list for the proposed slot allocation:

UEFA: 16 direct slots
CAF: 9 direct slots
AFC: 8 direct slots
CONCACAF: 6 direct slots
CONMEBOL: 6 direct slots
OFC: 1 direct slot

The host country’s automatic slot will be taken from the quota of its confederation. In the case of co-hosting, the number of countries to directly qualify will be decided by the FIFA Council. The above list compiles to a total of 46 with the remaining two spots being decided by a play-off tournament comprised of six teams which is to be played in the host country. The six teams are one for each confederation excluding UEFA in addition to one team from the host country’s confederation. Two teams will be seeded according to the FIFA World Rankings and will play the winners of the knockout matches that involve the other four unseeded teams.​​
